There was once a king who wanted to know three things: the right time to do everything, the most necessary people to pay attention to, and the most important thing to do.  

옛날에 세 가지를 알기 원하는 왕이 있었습니다. 모든 일을 하기에 언제가 적기인지, 주의를 기울여야 할 가장 필요한 사람이 누구인지, 그리고 해야 할 가장 중요한 일이 무엇인지.

He thought that knowing these things would ensure his success.

I didn’t realize for a long time that something I take for granted could be someone else’s biggest dream.

 One day, I learned about a program that needed volunteers to go to different parts of the world to help build houses for the poor.

After watching a presentation about it, I was really touched by the mission, so I decided to take part in the next volunteer trip.

I had my doubts, though.

 The volunteers and I got to meet the family that would be moving into the home we were going to build the day after we arrived in Karjat, India. 

자원봉사자들과 저는 인도의 Karjat에 도착한 다음 날 우리가 지을 집으로 이사하기로 되어 있는 가족을 만나게 되었습니다.

This family of five was living in a one-room hut. 

다섯 식구가 방 한 칸짜리인 오두막에 살고 있었습니다.

It was quite clear that this place was not big enough to house all the family members. 

이 장소가 모든 가족 구성원들을 수용하기에 충분히 큰 공간이 아님은 꽤 확실하였습니다.

In addition to that, there were jars everywhere to catch all the rainwater dripping from the roof. 

게다가, 지붕에서 떨어지는 빗물을 받아내기 위하여 여기저기 항아리가 놓여 있었습니다. 

With all these jars on the floor, there was hardly any space to sit, let alone lie down. 

바닥에 이 항아리들 때문에 눕기는커녕 앉을 자리도 거의 없었습니다.

It was shocking to see how they were living.

 After meeting them, I felt even more determined to build them a beautiful home.

 There were clear skies and temperatures over 30˚C that first week.

Under the burning sun, we carried bricks, mixed concrete, and dug holes for pipes.

We had to slowly take apart the family’s hut to get more bricks and other materials for the new house.

Every morning, the family and their neighbors would provide breakfast for everyone.

As I look back on this trip, I find it amazing that so many different people came together to build a house for a family they’d never met.

For many of us, it was the first time we’d ever built a house.

 Although two weeks may not seem like a long time, I had the chance to make new friends, learn about a different culture, and, most importantly, do something that makes the lives of others better. 

2주라는 시간이 그리 길어 보이지 않을 수도 있지만, 저는 새로운 친구를 만들고, 다른 문화에 대해 배우며 가장 중요하게는 타인의 삶을 더 나아지게 만드는 일을 할 기회를 가질 수 있었습니다.

I am so glad that this family now has a safe place where they can lay their heads.
